Designing with Steel: Strength, Speed, and Sustainability in Architecture
Material selection has always been fundamental to architectural practice, but today, it plays an even more strategic role. As design challenges grow more complex and timelines more demanding, architects are increasingly exploring materials beyond their physical properties for how they shape experience, streamline execution, and ensure long-term performance.
In the renovation of SMRJ School in Lucknow, this approach shaped every decision. The brief called for a multifunctional space that could support assemblies, performances, and informal student gatherings, without disrupting daily operations. Given these requirements, steel emerged as a natural choice for its speed, flexibility, and structural clarity. Its ability to span large distances with minimal structural weight, coupled with its adaptability to different forms, makes it an ideal solution for projects where both efficiency and longevity are paramount.
We designed a 12,000-square-foot tensile steel structure that was prefabricated off-site to allow for quick and clean installation. This approach minimised on-site disruption while meeting the project’s tight timeline and maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.

Beyond its speed, steel brought with it a sense of lightness. The strength of steel allowed us to create a large, unbroken space, giving the school the flexibility it needs for different functions. The tensile design of the structure is functional, dynamic, and provides an engaging, open environment for students and staff alike.

While steel presents some challenges, particularly around cost and the precision needed in design, its benefits quickly outweigh any concerns. The material’s inherent durability and low maintenance needs translate to long-term value. At SMRJ School, the result is a structure that responds to both present needs and future use. It is robust enough to withstand daily activity, yet refined in its presence, maintaining a sense of lightness and clarity in the built environment.
As building typologies evolve and user expectations grow more dynamic, the role of materials is becoming more nuanced. It’s essential to choose the right material for each specific challenge.
